Addressing wildfire readiness for Californians

CAL FIRE prioritizes protecting California's wilderness and residents during wildfire emergencies. Recognizing the critical need for accurate information and prompt advice on wildfire preparation, our team revamped the Ready for Wildfire (RFW) app to better inform Californians. I worked with the team at Exygy Design to establish a visual direction and UI component library for two public-facing prototypes.

Approach

  • User-research, interviews, and testing with California residents and firefighting experts informed design direction.

  • Collaboration with CAL FIRE stakeholders and internal team to co-create design principles and solutions.

  • Helped design a web-based solution that provides validated wildfire information through the incidents app and assists users in creating personalized wildfire readiness plans through the education-based app.

Over 1,500 accounts registered within the first month of launching Ready for Wildfire, with 86% of users creating wildfire readiness plans.

  • Sent over 1.2 million text messages during the main wildfire season, crucial for keeping Californians informed about active wildfires.

  • Enhanced accessibility and inclusivity by offering information in multiple languages and catering to users with limited internet connectivity.

  • Iterative improvements to the checklists and onboarding experience.
